MotherBoard – feat. IO Academy

We had the chance to catch up with IO Academy, who are one of our MotherBoard Signatories – They have re-launched their successful Diversitech funding programme.  The scheme offers contributions towards course fees of up to £1,100 to individuals from groups underrepresented in the tech sector including female, non-binary female, non-binary, transgender, ethnic minority and disabled applicants as well as parents and guardians returning to work after a career break.

The purpose of our ‘MotherBoard’ content series is to highlight incredible working mums within tech & data, as well as businesses that are supportive and progressive within their approach to creating more inclusive tech & data teams for women.

Amber @ MotherBoard: Why is it so important to offer the Diversitech funding programme to women?

  • We believe that digital skills and careers should be accessible to everyone but unfortunately the tech sector still has a long way to go in terms of gender equality. Diversitech gives us a platform to ensure the routes into tech that we offer are visible to women and make it clear that they are welcome and valued in the industry.

  • There are practical considerations too. Beginning a new role, or returning after a career break, in such a male-dominated industry can already feel daunting. We hope that, by doing what we can to mitigate some of the financial considerations, there'll be at least one less barrier preventing them from pursuing their dream job.

Amber @ MotherBoard: What impact do you think having a more diverse tech work force will have on the industry?

  • In our experience, the best teams are made up of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Tech talent isn't limited just to one gender or a particular group and so it stands to reason that inclusivity and diversity are integral to a thriving and innovative tech sector.

Amber @ MotherBoard: How can people apply for the Diversitech Fund?
