The Motherhood Penalty

After 18 months of hosting MotherBoard events online, we ran our first in-person event on the 6th October 2022.

It is reported that only 19% of the tech industry in the UK is made up of women, and half of women will leave the industry by the age of 35. A huge blocker in retaining women in tech is balancing a career whilst raising a family.

So, what are we as individuals and as a collective doing about it?

We tackled the often-forgotten topic : why are women leaving in droves at childbearing age and what can we do as leaders and peers to prevent further loss of talent within the industry? We tackled difficult subjects and got to the crux of the problem and worked out how we, as a collective, can fix the problem.

At MotherBoard we believe that if we can create positive change through tackling the stigmas and hardships around being a mum in tech, we will improve the gender pay gap, create gender-balanced teams, get more women into leadership and get the girls of the future engaged in a tech career.

The Thursday 6th October event was held at the notonthehighstreet head office.

Meet the panel:

Marie Hemingway - CTO & Co-Founder of Speak out Revolution
Liane Katz - Co-Founder of MAMA.Codes
Bo Ajayi-Walmsley - Software Engineer Consultant
Daniel Lopez Rovira- Engineering Manager at Olio
